About Tochigi Leather

Founded in 1937, Tochigi Leather continues to uphold traditional tanning techniques. "Full vegetable tanned leather" is a leather that Tochigi Leather is proud of, painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans. "Full vegetable tanned leather" literally refers to leather tanned with natural plant-based tannins. The tannin used is a resin extracted from the bark of the mimosa tree, an acacia tree, without the use of any harmful substances. During the tanning process, each hide is immersed in a pit filled with tannin for a full 20 days. After the long tanning process, the hide is dyed. This method preserves the natural texture of the leather, allowing the oils to seep out with use. This is a distinctive feature of full vegetable tanned leather. The resulting leather develops a richer color and lustre, allowing it to age beautifully.
